All of us have surely heard about Ayurveda, but many of us are not quite aware about the thousands of years old practices it entails. The ancient system of Ayurvedic science is estimated to have evolved as long as 5,000 years ago! Taken from the pages of ancient Ayurevdic texts Kshir pak Vidhi, also known as ‘Siddha Kshir,’ is a practice that lays the foundation for many of Ayurveda’s wondrous preparations. Kshir Pak vidhi comprises ‘Kshir’ which means ‘milk’ and ‘Pak’ which means ‘processed’. ‘Kshir Pak’ literally means medicated milk or milk processed with medicinal herbs.
KSHIR PAK AS A NUTRACEUTICAL
In today’s world, solutions made using this ancient vidhi can be termed as ‘nutraceutical’.
Like other nutraceuticals, 'Kshir Pak’ preparations find their applications in dietary as well as topical applications that help manage diseases and manage illnesses.
IMPORTANCE OF MILK IN AYURVEDA
Ayurveda realizes the benefits of milk and considers it ‘Purnanna’ which means ‘complete food’. No wonder mothers are so committed to making their children drink milk by hook or crook during their developmental years!
When milk itself is so important, then milk enhanced with medicinal properties elevates its significance to another level. It is like giving Arjun a Brahmastra! Which is why ‘Kshir Pak’ Vidhi finds its mention as one of the most important preparations in Ayurvedic texts. If you have grown up in a traditional Indian household, you have surely made use of more than one type of Kshir Pak preparations without necessarily realizing it. Here are a few examples!
Haldi ka Doodh
This warm preparation is made by adding turmeric to milk along with some herbs to create an aromatic health drink. With medicinal and healing properties of turmeric and certain aromatic herbs – this boiled milk is said to be extremely beneficial especially when a person catches common cold or has a headache or is generally fatigued.
It is an infusion of about 5 to 10 ml of milk and certain types of medicinal plants. This is widely considered as standard practice in India and is given to babies for maintenance of health, improvement of strength and for keeping away diseases.
Made during the famous ‘Kojagiri Poornima,’ the full moon day. This is made by keeping a vessel of sweetened milk boiled with dry fruits, certain herbs and rice exposed directly under the moon’s rays overnight and is consumed the next day. During this night the full moon is closer to our planet and its rays are said to increase the absorption of nutrients.
Hence ‘Kshir Pak’ is a tried and tested way to obtain maximum benefit of a medicinal plant through milk. The thousands of years of legacy can vouch for this! This unique preparation can also be used to benefit hair and help make those locks glorious.
